| Sector Snap: Water Utilities
Water utilities will likely be premium long-term investments as municipalities nationwide consider selling off their systems to feed cash needs, an analyst said Friday. "The privatization of municipal water systems would inject a profit motive and capitalist logic into many inefficient and bureaucratically run systems," Smith, Moore & Co. analyst Timothy Winter wrote in a note to clients. "The use of significant cash proceeds would dramatically improve existing and future municipal budgets, eliminate health liabilities and pass the burden of regulatory oversight to the professional public utility regulatory commissioners." .

Market plunges as traders play waiting game
HA NOI Last week was rough for Viet Nams stock market, with the VN-Index losing nearly 100 points in a single week for the first time since 2005. The Index closed on Friday at 545.68, less than half of where it stood a year ago. The VN-Index closed at 1,111.60 on March 21, 2007. Blue chips Sacombank (STB) and Phu My Fertilisers (DPM) led the market in trading volume, with 11.5 million and eight million shares changing hands, respectively. Nearly every code was a loser on the week, which also saw daily trading value and volume off, with the weeks turnover of VND2.9 trillion (US$183.3 million) 23.15 per cent lower than that of the previous week, and volume at only 85.2 million shares. Wall Street Securities deputy general director Pham Diem Hoa said domestic investors last week were still not buying but were also too jittery to sell, unsure of whether the index had bottomed out and was due for a rebound.
