Oil prices rise to all-time high of almost $112 a barrel as US dollar sinks

VIENNA, Austria - Oil prices jumped to an all-time trading high of almost $112 a barrel today as the tumbling U.S. dollar and plunging stock markets prompted investors to seek shelter in commodities.

Investors fled the dollar after a surprise move Sunday by the U.S. Federal Reserve to provide cash to financially squeezed Wall Street investment houses pushed the battered dollar deeper into multiyear lows against the yen.

"The Fed's move overall will help the liquidity of the U.S. dollar, and that will really further soften the dollar," said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore. "Meanwhile, investors seem to be just following the mantra of buying oil and commodities to hedge against the falling dollar and inflation."

Light, sweet crude for April delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange spiked $1.59 to a record $111.80 a barrel in electronic dealings in Asian trading.

Stocks Near Session Lows Going Into Late Afternoon Trading

(RTTNews) - Stocks have dipped back into the red during mid-afternoon trading on Friday. The weakness comes after the major averages experienced buying sentiment earlier in the session, which was fueled by bargain hunting following two sessions of losses.

Airline, retail and brokerage stocks are posting some of the most notable losses, with the retail sector being pushed down after JC Penny (JCP) slashing its outlook on its first-quarter earnings. On the other hand, resource, defense and technology stocks are clinging onto gains.

The major averages have seen some further downside in recent trading, pulling back to new lows for the session. The Dow is currently down 27.44 at 12,275.02, while the Nasdaq is down 7.92 at 2,272.91 and the S&P 500 is down 3.91 at 1,321.85.
